There was time after the competition and before dinner to play. We went to the city of Ames swimming complex. It is a very nice pool and the kids had lots of fun (and one grown-up, too ;) Tonight we will have the awards ceremony and parties.
Pictured is Ms. Dahlquist apprising the 4th grade team of how they did on their long term problem. They did well. The score they got is just 3 points away from the highest score they could get. We do not know their total score yet, because we don't know how they did on their Spontaneous Problem.
I was talking to a teacher from a different part of Texas who was amazed that we'd come this far since it was our first year competing in Odyssey of the Mind. She asked who our coach was and when I told her, she said, "Michelle Dahlquist is THE coach of Odyssey of the Mind." I know that the team members and parents of the team members completely concur. We could not have come this far if we not for a coach capable of bringing out the very best our children have to offer; harnessing their talents, pushing where they need to be pushed, yet pulling back to allow the freedom of their wildly running creativity. We don't know what we can do to honor Ms. Dahlquist; what we can do to repay all her work. We love you, Ms Dahlquist. Thank you for all your hard work.
The 4th grade team, which uses the balsa wood structure, competed today. Their structure, which weighed less than 12 grams, held 650 pounds. Because the structure weighed less than the permitted 15 grams, a calculation was made to make up for the 3 fewer grams. The adjusted weight held was 975 pounds. The Candy store skit was also well done. Everyone remembered their lines and the props all worked.
Each state and country has a booth set up in the Creativity Festival. Team members can play at each booth to earn a stamp on their Omer mask. The booth which Texas has is a game of Plinko. Walnut Bend mans the booth from 11:30-1:00. The fifth grade team is working the booth right now while the 4th grade team readies for their competition this afternoon.
The vehicle team did a flawless job on their long term problem. Everything worked as it should. The team remembered the script. I would say that it has been their best one yet. We have our spontaneous problem on Saturday. The 4th grade structure team competes tomorrow.
Teams members can trade state and country pins with other teams. Some pins are traded in sets, some individually. Some pins are popular enough that you may have to trade two of your pins for them.
